Driftless Report Cont. 5/10

I hit the spring creeks yesterday and arrived on a new stretch of water at 7:45 or so. The forecast rain hadn't materialized as I climbed the first fence, but I doubled back to grab the rain gear just in case. Fishing unfamiliar water is always fun and I found myself scoping out the deep bends and long runs before me. Not a soul in sight. I tied up my usual prospecting nymph rig including a little unweighted pink flashback scud and started throwing. My third cast yielded what may be my personal best brown in the Driftless. It wasn't the twenty incher I dreamed of, but damn close. This hen brownie was certainly well fed and gave me a pretty violent fight on a soft four-weight rod.

The fish were pretty aggressive for most of the day, but fishing seemed to slow as the storm front neared. The streamer bite was on as well and I took numerous fish stripping streamers through shallow and deep water alike. A stiff breeze stifled the hatches but the fish were still obviously hungry. Baetis emergers, caddis pupa and attractor nymphs all took fish too.
