Winter Activities

When winter rolls around many of us take up temperature specific activities like cross-country skiing and ice fishing. This winter so far has been lacking both good ice for fishing the hard water and good snow for skiing. The snow, while having fallen in some solid, measurable amounts recently, only lasted a few days before melting because it's 50 degrees and raining in January. Odd weather patterns aside, it's easy to say, "I'm ready for the opener" and then drift off into the cold, possibly colder times ahead.

This winter, I wanted better knowledge of the birds that surround me while on the water. What better place to learn than in my backyard? I have woods, a river, and lots of birds! I put a couple of feeders out a few weeks ago and after a few days of no visitors, the word got out and the entertainment began. Here are some of the common winter visitors.

Goldfinches

Downy Woodpecker

Dark Eyed Junco

 Male Cardinal

Red-Bellied Woodpecker and female Cardinal

White-Breasted Nuthatch
